Strawberry Fields Forever? Guns Flashed Over Hemp at Hueneme

The strawberry fields up the coast from Malibu are changing … right before our eyes.
Berries coming out … hemp is going in.
And last weekend … an armed confrontation on a pot growing field on Hueneme Road … just west of the Navy airfield.
The Ventura County Star reports that armed security guards and thieves confronted each other at about 9:15 p m Saturday night.
Guards reported that some thieves flashed a handgun at them.
It was not known if the guards were armed as well.
On a wide scale … Ventura County farms are being switched over to hemp and marijuana.
The City of Port Hueneme … just 20 miles up the coast from Trancas … is positioning itself as a center of marijuana and hemp processing … as it digs out of years of financial pressures
And“a lot of fields are bringing in security personnel to guard fields …because hemp is seen as a high-profit target.
That is according to Ventura County sheriff’s Capt. Mike Beckett … in an interview with the Ventura County Star.
All of a sudden … the fields just up the coast from Malibu are becoming one of the largest hemp-growing areas in California.
The crop’s gross value could reach $100 million or more here this year.
Industrial hemp is in the same plant species as marijuana … but has minimal intoxicant properties.
It is used to make lotions and other products.
But it is valuable … and it’s not clear whether would-be thieves know hemp will not get people high.
