$8k Raised in 15 Hours For Zuma Jay Defense Fund
Written by 991KBU on June 4, 2018
More than 8 thousand dollars was raised in less than a day … a legal defense fund for Malibu city council member Jefferson Wagner.
The district attorney’s office says in a search warrant that Wagner is suspected of committing a felony.
A large number of investigators … wearing flak jackets and armed with paramilitary equipment … sifted through Wagner’s two houses and business
As late as Friday afternoon … still no word on why.
One of those houses … Wagner’s longstanding residence … is outside city limits.
And it would be a felony act if Wagner’s legal domicile was outside city limits … and he served as city council member inside city limits.
But Wagner has acknowledged that publicly … and pledged to live at his condo at the Civic Center during his four year council term.
Speculation has centered on an investigation into that … as the D-A’s office has won convictions against several politicians for living outside their districts or cities in recent years.
The felony convictions have come with house arrest … probation … and removal from office.
At least one such conviction … against Los Angeles city councilman Richard Alarcon … was overturned because the judge gave bad jury instructions.

Back to the defense fund ….
It was created on Go Fund me by Wagner’s domestic partner … Candace Brown.
Wagner’s appointee to the planning commission … John Mazza … and long time slow growth activist Jae Flora Katz are urging people to contribute.
Candace Brown writes that it is not easy for her to ask the community for help … but she and Wagner need to hire a lawyer.
And because of legal advice … they are not talking to reporters about the case.
Wagner did tell KBUU news yesterday that he is doing well and thanks the community members who have expressed support.
