5.3 Quake Last Month Has Landslide Lessons

Written by on May 4, 2018

The Ventura County Star has a great article today about the recent magnitude 5 point 3 earthquake just off the coast of the island to the west of Malibu.

The magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit one month ago … in the middle of the morning … with an epicenter just off of Santa Rosa Island.

That’s about 40 miles west of Malibu.

It cracked the bricks at a historic ranch house on the island and triggered some large landslides out there.

The U S Geologic Survey says the earthquake was in an area where not a lot is known about the fault structures that bend and warp around the east west mountains that make up Malibu and the Channel Islands.

On a geologic scale … there have been thousands or maybe millions of earthquakes in this area.

But in modern times not since 1945.

If you’re interested in local geology … we recommend this article to you.

We have a link posted to it on the KBUU newswire.
