Two cities in Orange County are modifying their COVID rules … and reopening beaches in a veer limited way.

Laguna Beach and San Clemente had a firm closure …. 24/7 on their beaches as a result of the public health emergency.

Laguna Beach and San Clemente will reopen beaches 6 to 10  every morning … for running walking … swimming and surfing.

The city councils in both Newport Beach and Huntington Beach voted last night that their beaches will stay open all day and night.

You might recall that two days ago .. the governor expressed worry about the large crowds that open beaches attract.

“We cant see the images like we saw … particularly on Saturday in Newport Beach and elsewhere in the state of California and we’ve got to confront that.”

But the beach cities officials say the governor’s concerns are overblown.

Newport Beach put out an official statement.

“The vast majority of the beach visitors this weekend were practicing social distancing, but many were not,” the city of Newport Beach said in its statement.

The cities say most of those who hit the beach followed social distancing protocols, staying six feet apart on the sand.

All of this is being watch with much more than a little interested in Malibu and other coastal cities in Los Angeles county.

Beaches here are locked up… and apparently will be under the current public health order that expires May 15th.

Yesterday … LA County Public Health Department Director Barbara Ferrer said there were no plans to extend the current order.

But as the deadline approaches, officials will reevaluate what is best for the county.

Yesterday … the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to draw up a plan to ease the safer-at-home order.

Malibu is deferring to the County Department of public health decision.
