Think That Stuff In The Recycle Bin Gets Recycled? Not Always
Written by 991KBU on April 5, 2018
Malibu’s landmark recycling and plastic ban ordinance is hitting some bumps in the road.
The new rules that ban plastic foodware … in favor of stuff that composts … is running into the problem that the stuff doesn’t compost like old food does.
Although trash companies are taking it to composting facilities … the plasticware doesn’t break down … like th erest of the rotting food.
And if it’s mixed in with compost fodder … the entire load of biodegradable trash is rejected and sent to a dump.
And … those supposedly biodegradable polystyrene food containers?
They are getting tossed in the trash and hauled to the dump … t
That’s because there is no waste hauler in Malibu who is taking them to plastic factories for recycling.
The whole stinking issue goes back to the city council … to redefine with word recyclable in the city code … also next Monday.
