Overnight Rentals hearing Tonight at 6:30

The issue of B and Bs … and how they are changing Malibu … goes up for a public hearing tonight.
Hundreds of homes in Malibu have been converted to hotel rooms already … at least 400 houses and guest houses are registered with the city and paying overnight hotel taxes.
The city got 1 point 7 million dollars in overnight taxes last year … although some of those come from actual hotels.
Tonight … the Malibu Plannign Commission will consider an ordinance to regulate B and Bs in Malibu.
Like all coastal cities… the Coastal Commssion is watchign clsoely … it want to increase the Number of bed and breakfast in Malibu in the name of increasing coastal access.
The proposed Malibu ordinance is complicated … but here are some of the highlights.
It would ban B and B’s in Malibu’s condominium and apartment buildings unless the owner is present … Think renting out a spare bedroom.
It would require that the rental be the owner’s primary residence … as opposed to a house purchased for the purpose of running a vacation rental.
It would require that neighbors be given the phone number of either the owner … or a property manager who could respond within one hour of a complaint … like a loud party.
The public hearing is tonight at six thirty at Malibu City Hall.
