Malibu’s state senator has introduced a proposed law to do away with Columbus Day as an official state holiday.
And Italian Americans are angry.
State Senator Henry Stern has introduced a bill to end California’s Columbus Day … and replace it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
“I’m getting heat,” Stern told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s a robust conversation.
“There are great Italian Americans throughout history but Columbus is not one of them.”
Stern tells L A Times columnist George Skelton that Columbus brought “systematic rape, slavery, torture and exploitation” to the New World.
Snorts the big headline on the L-A Times California page: Bill To Get Rid Of Columbus Day is a Dumb Idea.”
