In news from down the coast … future City Council elections in the City of Santa Monica will be determined by a seven district map.
A judge has agreed with malibu lawyer Kevin Shenkman … who sued Santa Monica on behalf of latino activists who live along the 10 Freeway corridor in Santa Monica.
The judge ruled that Santa Monica’s at-large voting system violates the California Voting Rights Act .
She ordered the city to discontinue at-large elections and adopt a district based system.
How this affects the Santa Monica – Malibu school system is unclear at best.
The judge’s order does not affect the school district … but voting procedures for the santa Monica-Malibu district are set by the Santa Monica city charter.
It would stand to logic that if the at-large voting for city council in Santa Monica violates the law … so does the at-large voting for school board seats in Santa Monica and by extension Malibu.
As of now however … the court ruling in Santa Monica does not directly affect Malibu.
EDITOR’S NOTE: THIS STORY WAS CORRECTED AT 10:59 AM TO FIX KEVIN SHENKMAN’S NAME.
